A Family Bike Ride: Weeride Classic Bike Seat REVIEW

WeeRide Classic Bike Seat REVIEW.

Take a ride with me………

Pre kiddies, myself and Mr S thought nothing of a lovely Sunday afternoon bike ride to blow the cobwebs away. I am sad to say that we have not really managed to get out on the bikes that much since our little ones arrived, but we have talked about getting back out for sometime now. We own a campervan, and we live for our adventures and enjoy the great outdoors.  When we were asked to review the Weeride Classic bike seat we jumped at the chance. Our eldest who is 6, has just mastered riding her bike and is forever asking to get out and practice, but our middle daughter, who is nearly 3 has not quite grasped riding hers with stabilisers, and our youngest has only just turned 7 months, therefore the age differences can make the logistics of heading out on a family bike ride slightly more tricky.

It was a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon last week, so we grabbed the chance to visit the Cheshire countryside and try out our new WeeRide Classic bike seat.

The WeeRide Classic

“The Weeride Classic is unlike other bike seats, it is a centre mounted seat, placing the weight central and therefore having little impact on steering and balance.”

“Front mounted seats can make steering difficult, and can also prove an unsafe option in an emergency stop situation. Rear seats can not only destabilise the bike  but result in your child looking at your back and having limited views.”(WeeRideUK)

I wanted to find out if a central mounted seat allows for interaction with the child and if it results in a far more interesting view for the child.

Product Specification

 Weight 4kgs

Box Size 26L x 30 W x 50H

Age range 1-4 years.

The WeeRide bike seat fits all bikes, although it is not recommended for drop handle bar bikes.

Fitting the seat

The instructions provided are very straight forward. Mr S will be the first to agree that he doesn’t really do DIY or self assembly (I normally call upon my dad), but instructions were really clear…an allen key is provided and the seat was securely fitted in place within about 15-20 minutes. If you have any queries, there is also a tutorial on the WeeRide website to assist.

When we opened the box the seat did look quite small, but WeeRide UK have a guarantee that this seat will fit your child at aged four and if it doesn’t then they agree to return 50% of the purchase price.

The Ride.

Once the seat is fitted on the bike, WeeRide recommend a test drive without a passenger so that you feel happy and are able to get used to the seat. Mr S had a little ride around prior to placing Lil_E into the seat. We found it easier to lift her in to the seat between us, with one adult holding the bike securely and the other adult fastening the harness and foot straps. The WeeRide is designed for ages one to four – however it can be used from 6-9 months as long as your child’s neck muscles are strong enough. This is really useful as we have previously struggled to find a seat that is suitable for both a 7 month old and a nearly 3 year old. I was actually worried that our girl would be too big for a bike seat but it was perfect for her and she appeared comfortable, secure and happy!

The Verdict.

First and foremost Lil_E  L O V E D the ride.  She told us this, and as she kept asking her daddy to go faster and faster…I think she felt safe and secure.

Years ago we had a little incident where the trailer came off the back of our bike, totally our error as we didn’t realise that we had not fitted it correctly to the bike, and I have to say it really frightened me and we never used it again.  We found that the seat is easily fitted to your bike – instructions are clear and the 5 point safety harness made for a safe and secure ride.

We really liked the concept of the seat being positioned on the front of the bike meaning that we could see what Lil_E was doing and talk to her easily throughout the bike ride. The pedestal on the front allows for tired heads to rest, and little hands to hold on to. WeeRide state that the bike seat can be used for under 1 as long as the child has good head control. Our little man is 7 months but he has really great head control and can sit up well – I think he will just love it (although I am not sure our Lil_E will be happy to share!). Another great feature that Mr S really liked is the fact that the seat can be quickly removed for a solo ride too.

The afternoon was really lovely, just to wipe the dust off our bikes that have been left standing for far too long and to enjoy family time, allowing our eldest to practice and continue to master a new skill in the fresh air was really wonderful.

All in all, we loved the seat. It felt safe and secure and looked really comfortable. The centre mounted seat makes it easy to ride and balance. We now need to find a bike rack to fit Otis the camper – as Mr S is completely ‘sold’ and is looking forward to taking the bikes with us on our campervan road trips.  It has opened the door for us to continue to make those special memories, and to enjoy a bike ride with our little family – that for us is priceless.
