12 great UK getaways with kids
We have never been very good at planning our weekend breaks, road trips or holidays. We always seem to spend the first weekend of the holidays frantically looking for inspiration for a short break or a last-minute family holiday. This year is going to be different and I am already looking for inspiration for the Summer holidays. I am going to start planning our trips….in advance (I know, I know…I can but try!) Here is a round-up of 12 great UK getaways with kids
London
We are lucky that we get to visit London regularly as we often visit family. We love to hop on the tube and explore the sights of our capital. The kids love to visit the London Eye, and Buckingham Palace. No matter what time of the year it is, we love to head to one of the many wonderful parks in London. There are so many things to see and do, and a weekend break exploring the sites doesn’t have to cost the earth. Next time we visit I would love to try out the London Duck Tours.
Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire is a wonderful place to visit, with award-winning beaches, dramatic coastlines, hidden coves and picturesque towns and villages, there is something for everyone. During our mini break we headed to Tenby, Manorbier Beach, Hilton Court Gardens, Church Doors Cove, and Pendine Sands.
Cornwall
Cornwall is a wonderful setting for a family holiday. With miles upon miles of glorious coastline, families can try their hand at surfing, body boarding, sailing, spend hours searching for crabs on the beach, or just while away the afternoon taking in the laid back vibe with a coffee or an ice-cream.
Dorset
A particular favourite of ours – there is so much to see and do, you most certainly won’t be bored. Take your pick from museums, castles, country parks, beaches and sports a plenty. We love to take a picnic and head to the spectacular and iconic Durdle Door, and dip our toes in the waters at Lulworth Cove.
Devon
There are so many wonderful and unique places to visit in Devon We have enjoyed many a mini break in Devon. We have collected shells at Babbacombe Bay, built sandcastles on the vast stretch of sand at Woolacombe beach, and met some cheeky otters at Wildwood Escot. Cheshire
We lived in Cheshire for many years, and there are some great places to visit that don’t cost the earth. The Cheshire Ice Cream Farm just outside Chester is a particular favourite of ours (and it is free admission!), along with Chester Cathedral, the City walls, Beeston Castle and Delamere Forest.
York
We were lucky enough to enjoy two weekend breaks in York last year. It is a wonderful city with an abundance of history, charm and so many attractions for families. There is so much that you can see and do and we loved wandering around the cobbled streets, exploring the Shambles and walking the City Walls – all totally free.
The Lake District
The Lake District is jam packed with outdoor and indoor activities for all of the family. It is somewhere that we love to visit with our little ones, having stayed in Lake Windermere, and more recently stayed in Ullswater. A family day out on the Ullswater Steamers is well worth a trip, with one of my most favourite memories – sitting in the bay at Glenridding watching the littles run into the water, fully clothed with fishing nets and buckets. It is a place of outstanding natural beauty, and there really is no place quite like it.
Staffordshire
Staffordshire has so much to offer, from stunning countryside, exciting family friendly attractions to visit, culture and heritage. What’s more, there are so many attractions to visit that don’t cost the earth, think country parks, pleasant walks around the many lakes, and Cycling in Churnet valley . Our children love a visit to the Emma Bridgwater factory or throwing a pot a the World of Wedgwood . You can’t visit Staffordshire without a visit to our little place of happiness… Trentham Gardens
Edinburgh
We have enjoyed some amazing Scottish Road trips. Last Easter we headed to East Lothian, a perfect base to explore the sites and the surrounding area. We danced with the fairies at Archerfield walled garden, and marvelled at the rugged beauty on Yellowcraig beach. Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital with Edinburgh Castle overlooking the city and home to Scotland’s Crown Jewels.
Wiltshire
Visiting Stonehenge has been on my bucket list for years. I have seen and heard so many things about those mysterious stones. Considered one of the best known ancient wonders of the world, it is definitely worth a visit. Visit Wiltshire and explore the quintessentially English countryside… be inspired by the marvellous cathedral in the medieval city of Salisbury.. visit the Avebury Stone Circle and stop by at the National Trust gardens in Stourhead.
North Wales
I could write about North Wales forever. It holds so many beautiful and special childhood memories for me. Growing up, we spent many a summer walking the beach collecting shells in Llanbedrog, waterskiing and dinghy sailing in Abersoch and enjoying an ice-cream in Caernarfon. Not to mention the weekends exploring the sites of Anglesey, Bangor, Snowdonia and Porthmadog. There is something magical about North Wales, once you visit…you just have to keep on going back.
