Outdoor fun at Wildwood Escot A Family Day Out

Wildwood Escot: Family Friendly Day Out

During our stay at Andrewshayes Holiday Park in East Devon, we were invited along to explore Wildwood Escot for the day. We love a day out to enjoy the great outdoors, so of course we didn’t hesitate.  With a few threatening rain clouds in the sky, we headed off to see what Wildwood Escot had to offer.

Wildwood Escot, Devon

Wildwood Escot is a family friendly day out in Devon based in a wonderful woodland park setting. It is part of the Wildwood Wildlife Trust and during your visit you can expect to see wolves, wild cats, wild boar, birds of prey, short-clawed otters, and red squirrels. You can also enjoy the woodland nature trails, indoor soft play, and outdoor adventure playground, get lost in the maze, and toast marshmallows in the Anglo-Saxon village. There really is something for all ages.

We started our adventure by picking up a free visitor map at the entrance. Wildwood Escot is set in over 200 acres of woodland so a map definitely comes in handy and allows you to plan your day. Our first stop was the otters. Wildwood Escot is home to a small number of cheeky short-clawed otters who were very visible, playful and lively.

We then wandered through to the birds of prey and enjoyed a wonderful bird of prey flight display out on the lawns.

By this point the dark clouds had cleared, the sun was shining, and the little ones were getting hungry, so we stopped by and had a picnic in the walled gardens. I don’t know about you, but I love a walled garden, filled with colourful blooms and an expanse of lawn. It always screams out for a picnic, and a handstand or two (not from me can I just add 🙂 !

With full tummies we then headed on over to the Anglo-Saxon area where we spent a considerable time exploring. Our eldest seemed to really love it here, trying her hand at toasting marshmallows and making wooden spinning tops.

Our next stop was the maze, although I have to say, after half an hour the maze clearly got the better of us and we sloped off hanging our heads in shame that we had given up. The truth is our middle daughter had her heart set on the pirate ship, the indoor play barn and the adventure playground, and we wanted to find the wolves, wild boar and wild cats.

Family Friendly

Wildwood Escot can easily be navigated with a pushchair as there are buggy friendly paths around the estate. Just to note, it can be a bit of a struggle in the woodland area near to the pirate ship and I think if we returned we would opt to take the carrier rather than the pushchair.

Top Tip – I can imagine the woodland area would get muddy if there is any amount of rainfall, so I would advise wellington boots and a change of clothes for the little ones.

There are toilets and baby changing facilities on site. There is also a Coach House Restaurant on the estate, although we didn’t sample the food on this occasion as we had bought a picnic along with us.

Yesterday we had a great time over at @wildwoodescot . We saw Lynx, Wild boars, red squirrels, wolves, birds of prey, and my most favourite – Otters. The littles ones loved the Anglo-Saxon village- particularly toasting the marshmallows… I’ll share more of our day soon but for now here are a few pictures from our day 🙂 . . . . . . . #devon #wildwoodescot #myfamilyadventures #countrykidsfun #Curiouslittleexplorers #raisingragamuffins #daysoutwithkids #travel #campervanlife #Goexplore #UKexplore #instatravel #instakids #mycolourfulkids #whatevertheweatherkids #lifeisoutdoors #myhappycapture #moretoexploreoutdoors #justpassingthrough #beyondthewanderlust #explorerkids #funseekingkids #lifewithinfourcorners #pottyadventures #lovelifeoutside #watchthemlearn #naturelearners #adventurelikebeatrixpotter #ad

Our Verdict

We enjoyed a really lovely day out at Wildwood Escot. There is something here for all ages. It is a wonderful day of learning, wildlife, and nature. We loved that Wildwood Escot had a ‘raw’, natural, ‘earthy’ feel to it, and it didn’t feel commercialised. We enjoyed a lovely family day out in the fresh air, with the added bonus that it was a learning experience. Would we return? Definitely – our little man was mesmerised by the animals, and our daughters are still talking about those cheeky otters.
