Camping and Caravanning Club: Sheriff Hutton campsite review

Sheriff Hutton campsite review

As a family of five, we really enjoy camping. There is nothing better than sitting outside, watching the sun go down, with the kids playing happily in view of you. Don’t get me wrong, I know camping is all the better in the sunshine, and I also know that you can’t predict the British weather.  I guess this is why I spend hours searching the internet for family friendly campsites with good amenities, that are safe for our littles, and that have a great choice of activities locally. We spent a while looking for campsites near York and stumbled across Camping and Caravanning Club Sheriff Hutton campsite

Campsites near York

We tend to go for the smaller campsites, with electric hook up and a choice of hard standing and grass pitches.  Good wash facilities is essential with a family bathroom preferential as showers are not loved by our 3 year old and 10 month old.  I also look for a campsite with a children’s play park as a minimum and with a good choice of activities locally.

We are always on the look out for wonderful family friendly campsites with good amenities that are in a good location. Last weekend, the sun made an appearance, and we headed off for a weekend stay to Sheriff Hutton, with Camping and Caravanning Club.

Camping and Caravanning Club: Sheriff Hutton Campsite

We had a very long journey on a Friday night but as soon as we arrived we were warmly greeted at reception, and directed to our hard standing pitch. We were given all the relevant information that we needed during our stay. The site had a small shop for anything that you may need or have forgotten, and there are plenty of information leaflets for recommendations for thing to do in the area, places to eat, and takeaways that will deliver to the campsite.

The Sherriff Hutton campsite is a small and friendly site with around 90 grass and hard standing pitches.  What hit me instantly was that the site was beautifully maintained, the lawns well cut, with an abundance of trees and flowers dotted around.

We were shown to our pitch. The pitches were a great size, and the shower block and amenities only a small walk away across the field (important for those midnight dashes to the bathroom with the little ones.) We were positioned opposite the play ground, much to the girls delight. What I love about the site is the 6M rule, so you know you have space around you to enjoy the great outdoors, without hearing every word spoken by your neighbours.

Campsite near York

We have stayed at many campsites over the years, and this campsite near York was an ideal, tranquil base to explore York and the surrounding area. Come the evening when it was time to try to tempt the girls away from the play park, and settle the little man to sleep, the campsite was noticeably quiet and peaceful.

Another plus point for those that may need more to persuade them that camping is for them – is the glamping option available on this site. Here you can enjoy a night under the stars in a luxury ready erect safari tent. The tents come complete with cosy furnishings and luxuries- all you need to do is bring yourself, and enjoy the great outdoors.

Things to do near to the Sheriff Hutton Campsite

Sheriff Hutton

Sheriff Hutton is a charming rural village in North Yorkshire that lies about 1 – 1.5  miles away from the campsite. It has two pubs, a post office and noticeably the ruins of Neville Castle that tower over the village.

Yorkshire Lavender

This was recommended to us on reception and is well worth a visit.  Yorkshire Lavender is a 60-acre family run hillside farm with lavender gardens, a maze, plant shop and a sculpture park.

York

We headed to York for the day to meander around the shops and to wander around the Shambles. The Shambles is an area of narrow lanes with beautiful picturesque 15 century buildings that lean into the middle of the street. There is a series of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Before heading home we were lucky enough to enjoy a luxury Lady Betty Afternoon Tea at the world renowned Bettys.

York Minster

York Minster is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. During a visit to the Minster, marvel at the spectacular stain glass work, climb the central tower and enjoy the beautiful views across York.

Camping and Caravanning Club: Sheriff Hutton Campsite -Our Verdict

We had a wonderful stay here. The site was a safe, family friendly and peaceful campsite. The amenities were excellent, with a family bathroom, electric hook up, dishwashing facilities, a children’s play area and wi-fi. I liked that the site team were on site and if required. Sheriff Hutton is a great base, with access to local attractions and park and rides if you are heading into York. We had a really relaxing weekend and would love to return.
