Dirty Dancing review 2023
Dirty dancing is an iconic film, and in short, if you love the movie you will absolutely LOVE the show.
Dirty dancing, an iconic 1987 film that tells the story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young spirits from very different worlds, who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives……..
It was a balmy Tuesday evening in Stoke- on Trent and there was a hustle and bustle in Hanley, at the Regent Theatre as everyone arrived to watch the opening night of Dirty Dancing. I have said it before but I absolutely LOVE the film. It is a classic that I can watch time and time again. Would the theatre production live up to the expectation? Here is our Dirty Dancing review – Live at the Regent.
Dirty Dancing The Classic Story on Stage at the Regent, Stoke-on Trent
The iconic Dirty Dancing. Who doesn’t love this film?
It’s the summer of 1963, and a 17 year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing. She is on holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, and she shows little interest in the resort activities. She stumbles across an all-night dance party at the staff quarters. This is where she first catches sight of Johnny Castle – the resort dance instructor. Her life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both on-stage and off. Two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds come together for what will turn out to be the best summer of their lives! A film of love, commitment, determination, and fighting for what you believe in.
The cast are phenomenal. Kira Malou (Baby) and Michael O’Reilly (Johnny Castle) had an exceptional stage presence and energy and they had big shoes to fill and smashed it. Georgia Aspinall (Penny) is a wonderfully talented dancer and has real energy on stage. I wanted to give recognition to Kellerman’s Band (Tom Parsons, Tom Parsons, Gabriel Askew, Tom Mussell, and Tim, Wade), who were an absolute incredible part of the production and really made the show.
