Going plastic free has been on our minds for some time now and we are trying to make a conscious effort to make small changes. We have slowly started to think about our carbon footprint, choosing road trips over air travel. We have switched to eco friendly shampoo and conditioning bars, bamboo toothbrushes and we try to remember to pack reusable material shoppers and reusable drinks bottles. As we continue with our plastic free journey, I have put together a few plastic free travel ideas for you to consider when travelling.
Disclosure – We have been gifted some of the items in this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ditch the plastic straws
Ditch plastic straws altogether, or say hello to biodegradable straws. We have tried these grass straws made from 100% bullrush stems, meaning they are fully renewable. They are also compostable. They don’t go mushy or soggy, are fully food-safe, gluten-free and non-toxic, and contain no preservatives or colourings.
Shampoo and conditioner bar
I am totally sold on shampoo and conditioner bars. Great for travel as you don’t have to worry about spillage, and even better they are perfect for carry on! The biggest reason we love these bars is they don’t require packaging and are therefore better for the environment than the plastic bottle alternatives.

Cutlery wrap with reusable cutlery
This cutlery wrap from Sun Dipped Sea is beautiful. A handmade Zero Waste Cutlery wrap is a great alternative to plastic utensils whilst on your travels. Small enough to pop in your bag, I use this for my lunch at work, and also take it on our campervan travels and on our road trips.
Each Wrap comes with:
1 x Set of Disposable Biodegradable Bamboo Cutlery – (Fork, Knife, Big Spoon, Tea Spoon)
1 x Reusable Bamboo Straw
1 x Straw Cleaner.
All of which can be washed and reused.

Reusable water bottle/ travel mug
This was the first change that we made in our journey to plastic free travel. We take our reusable water bottles and travel mugs wherever we go. The majority of places will refill your reusable bottle. Many retailers offer discount if you bring along a reusable mug to their stores. We have recently enjoyed the Elderflower fields and Just So family friendly festivals where visitors were encouraged to bring along their reusable bottles to use on the festival sites.
I take a canvas shopper everywhere with me on my travels. I use it in supermarkets, at the markets, and also take it with me for days out to the beach. A canvas shopper can also be washed and reused, not to mention it looks stylish.
Another great idea are these absolutely beautifully soft facial rounds. These particular facial rounds are 50% Bamboo & 50% Cotton reusable make up pads and are biodegradable, plastic free and are just a really beautiful alternative to the disposable versions.
They can simply be washed with your normal load of washing and air dried (Do not tumble dry.)

Although we have used electric toothbrushes more recently, I do hate to think how many plastic tooth brushes I have thrown away over the years. We have very recently been using The Humble Co Bamboo Toothbrushes that are biodegradable apart from the bristles – these need to be removed using a pair of pliers.
The packaging is made from recycled materials, including the inside wrapper, and I love that for every brush sold, the company gives a child in need one too, as well as educating them about oral care.
