5 Reasons why Fuerteventura is a great destination for families

Autumn is just around the corner and it won’t be long before the colder nights set in and the heating is turned up a notch. Those balmy Summer evenings and our holiday to the Isles of Scilly seem like a distant memory now. I guess there is only one thing to help to combat those post holiday blues…..book another holiday, right?!  We have been looking at booking a half term family break to the Canary Islands, and having visited Fuerteventura a number of times with and without kids, I can tell you that it is a great choice for couples and families looking for some winter sun. When the people over at Holiday Gems asked us why we think Fuerteventura is a great destination for families – it didn’t take us long to come up with 5 reasons….

The Climate

Years ago I used to sit on a sun lounger by the pool, with a good book and my personal stereo (I am showing my age now). Nowadays I am lucky if I can sit on a sun lounger for longer than fifteen minutes without getting up to replace a discarded sun hat or apply some more sunblock to one of the kids. I love the sunshine, but I can also find it a little stressful trying to protect the kids from the sun, which is why we have chosen Fuerteventura for winter sun in the past.  On average, temperatures hover around 18°C – 32°C therefore you can enjoy the sunshine all year round. During the winter months, temperatures average around 20 °C which is ideal when travelling with kids. Also, there can be prevailing winds that can be a welcomed relief when holidaying with the kids.

The Beaches

The beaches in Fuerteventura are beautiful. They are really varied, from white sandy beaches and turquoise waters to black rocky sand – there is something for everyone. There are so many beautiful beaches with over 210 miles of coastline. What we did notice when we stayed in Caleta de Fuste is the beaches were not crowded at all. You will be sure to find a spot to catch some winter sun, watch the kids build a sandcastle or two, or just take a stroll and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Family friendly

Most families head to Fuerteventura during the winter months in search of sunshine, great beaches, pools and shallow waters that are safe for little tots. Although the beaches and pools are often the main attraction for families (and there are some really stunning beaches!), there is also a great choice of family friendly activities here. The Baku Water Park in Corralejo has wave pools, slides, rides and crazy golf. The Oasis Park (La Lajita Zoo) is a theme park and attraction located in La Lajita – home to elephants, giraffes and hundreds of species of birds. The kite festival has taken place since the late 1980s and is usually on at the beginning of November for three days. Over 150 kites are given out to children who then contribute to coloring the sky. My children would absolutely love to catch the sweets dropped from the parachuting teddy bears!

Easily Accessible

Flight times from the UK are around 4 .5 and 5 hours. This is not a long flight when searching for that winter sunshine… but remember to pack plenty of distractions and snacks to occupy the little ones during the flight. We stayed in Caleta de Fuste which is an ideal location with a 15-20 minute transfer time from the airport. We also consider the time difference when travelling with tots, and we love that there is no time difference between the UK and Fuerteventura….so no jet lag!

Watersports

I do like to try my hand at any of the activities on offer and love to try out the waterskiing, sailing or surfing. Yes…I am always that one searching for the outdoor yoga class and utilising the resort’s gym, and we have also been know to scuba dive pre kiddies. There are so many watersports on offer here including sailing, surfing, paddle boarding, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing trips. There is more than enough to keep everyone occupied during your holiday. Next time we visit I would have to take the kids on a boat trip to Los Lobos island to spot seals…. my eldest would love to try out snorkelling in the crystal clear water.
