If you have followed my blog for a while, you will already know that we are big fans of a road trip! Why? Well I love the freedom that a road trip brings, I love that we are not restricted to times, or a schedule…and I love the feeling of spontaneity  – you can change direction, stop by the roadside to be wowed by a view, or pack up and leave to ‘chase the sun’ if the weather turns. We are also not great lovers of planning, much preferring to ‘wing it’ for our holiday, trip or mini break, and not giving a thought to the route or the journey time. As a result, we have probably added an hour or two onto many of our journey times; doing a lap or ten on a motorway. That being said, we are super lucky that our children are great travellers and don’t really bother too much if we are stuck on the road for a number of hours. When the lovely guys at The Book People invited us to take a look at their collection of activities and books for kids to take their travels, I jumped at the chance. Whenever we travel by road, or by air, I alway pack a bag for each of my little ones, containing activities and books, snacks, a change of clothes and nightwear, just incase our journey is longer than anticipated. I also always keep a look out throughout the year, in search of ideal activities for kids to take on a road trip – travel related and easy to pack….

The Book People have a wonderful selection of activity books for kids that are ideal for travel loving kiddies!  Here are a few of my favourite travel related books and activities for kids that we will be taking on our road trips and holidays this year.

Travel Doodles

Our eldest loves to colour, doodle and draw, and she takes a little pencil case of pens everywhere. This lovely travel doodle book is ideal for ages 6+. The doodle book is bright and colourful, and encourages children to complete a number of travel related scenes including camping scenes, outdoor adventures and seaside scenes.

Ideal for ages 5+ – we have been big fans of Usborne books for such a long time. This beautiful and colourful book takes your child on a journey around the world, from the Amazon to Hollywood to a tour of the Norwegian Fjords. Children can complete the mazes, and the book includes the world’s iconic landmarks – great for travel loving children!

Julia Donaldson Activity Collection

We are huge fans of Julia Donaldson in our house, and this activity collection is perfect to keep the kids entertained in the car, on an aeroplane, on holiday or in a restaurant. It is a brilliant collection of 10 popular Julia Donaldson books, each  filled with puzzles, games, colouring and stickers. Sticker collections seem to keep my older girls occupied for great lengths of time, and we love to take them out to restaurants, and on long car journeys as they are not particularly messy and seem to keep the kids busy for hours! Great when you get stuck in bank holiday traffic 🙂

I Love London Sticker Book

We love London, it is where Mr Otis and Us was born, and we visit as often as we can. We try to visit the sites whenever we stay for a weekend, so this book is particularly special to us. It is filled with all the famous London landmarks, and contains stickers, press outs, and loads of lovely activities including Tower of London colouring, royal dress up and Hyde Park fun. A lovely book to keep the littles ones entertained. It is aimed at ages 3+.

Peppa Pig collection – 10 books and carry bag.

My youngest loves Peppa Pig – in fact he is Peppa Pig mad, and I love that these books are small, thin and light and come in a little carry bag – perfect for travel, and perfect for reading to on holiday or in the car. The collection also contains the current favourite – Peppa Pig Goes on Holiday.  We have just returned from a holiday in Italy and this book talks about Peppa pig and her family visiting Italy on holiday, getting on the aeroplane and exploring the sites. We loved the relevance of this book to our own holiday and took it away with us for bedtime reading (plus it kept our youngest amused on the aeroplane ride.) Our eldest tells me she is too old for Peppa Pig, but I still catch her listening to the story every now and again 🙂

i-spy Collection – 12 books

Anyone else spend a good hour of a journey playing i-spy? Road trips are great to encourage children to spot things and this collection of 12 i-spy books are pocket-sized, interactive books aimed at encouraging children to discover, explore and spot things whilst out and about. I love these books, the collection includes In the City, On a train journey, On a car journey and Vehicles on a road.  The idea is that when your child spots the pictures in the book, they score points. Once your child reaches 1000 points they can apply for an i-spy certificate and badge (instructions are at the back of each book) – perfect to keep children entertained for a long journey.
