Travelodge York Central Layerthorpe
It was nearing the end of the Summer holidays, and we decided to squeeze in one last weekend away before the early mornings and school run chaos begun. We had visited York earlier in the year where we camped at The Camping and Caravanning Club site: Sheriff Hutton. We had such a lovely weekend, so when the people at Travelodge invited us to stay at their new hotel – York Central Layerthorpe, we decided we would love to return and see what else York had to offer.
You know how much we love to camp. I love to sip coffee (and wine) outside on a deck chair, with a crochet blanket draped over my knees, and watch my kids become a little more feral as the weeks pass. On the other hand we do love a comfy bed that we don’t have to make, a meal out, a midnight toilet stop that doesn’t involve trekking through a field, and a place to blow-dry my hair in the warmth. It is the simple things in life, right?!
Travelodge York Central Layerthorpe
Travelodge York Central Layerthorpe is a brand new 128 room hotel. It is well positioned overlooking the River Foss, just outside the City of York and approximately a ten minute walk into the city centre.
To celebrate the opening of York Layerthorpe Travelodge, the company’s fifth hotel in the city of York – the hotel chain has recently released 15,000 rooms for £35 or less
Our family room had a neutral contemporary decor, with a king size bed, and two additional beds for the girls. We also had a small travel cot in the corner already set up for our little man. The Dreamer beds had plump cushions and a warm thick duvet. There was a cooler system, a TV with freeview on the wall, and a kettle with ample tea and coffee.
The en suite bathroom had a white suite and a shower over the bath, with a large mirror and great lighting.
The hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar for drinks, breakfast, snacks, and evening meals. There is also an option for late night snacks. The menu offers a good choice of pub style food including pizza, burgers, salads and pasta, and sharing dishes which we sampled on the Friday night. Another note is that for those travelling with little ones, we found the restaurant to be really family friendly with high chairs available and the staff bought over colouring sheets and crayons for the girls which was a lovely touch.
We pre-booked breakfast each morning, which is served between 8-11 on the weekend and available for £8.25 per person – and the best bit… kids under 16 eat for free.
The rooms are comfortable and had everything that we needed. After a full day of walking on the Saturday it was lovely to walk back to the room and put our feet up. When the kids snoozed, Mr S even wandered into York and came back with a bottle of wine and a Wagammama – which I have to say – we loved! (Yes I know – it’s all rock and roll and we sure know how to live!)
Wi-fi is also available in the rooms which is great. It is free for the first 30 minutes, and there is the option to purchase for 24 hours for £3 which we did opt for.
The website states that free parking is available at the hotel on a first come first served basis. We arrived early evening on the Friday night for our weekend break and despite it being a weekend we didn’t find parking to be a problem at all. There is alternative parking nearby and this is payable – see website for details.
Things to do in York
There is so much to see and do here, 48 hours in York with kids just really isn’t long enough, and you will most definitely want to return
You can’t visit York without walking the City Walls. The preserved walls are around 3.4 kilometres long and are the longest medieval town walls in England. Entry is free and the views are well worth the 2+ hours circuit.
If a shop and a slice of cake is more to your taste, then you have to stop by the iconic Betty’s tea room and sample the Lady Betty Afternoon tea , before a stroll and a shop along The Shambles.
So we headed to York! We have had a lovely two night break in the Travelodge … yesterday we ticked off York Minster, the City Walls and had a little shop on The Shambles. The Shambles is one of the best preserved medieval streets in the world, with buildings in the street dating back to the fourteenth century. How eerie does this photo look with no shoppers? We have a full day planned today at an adventure playground. Today is all about the little ones, and they are so excited:) Have a lovely Sunday! . . . . . #MySundayPhoto #York #citybreak #ukexplore #travelodge #theshambles #familytravel #travelersnotebook #travelwithkids #beautiful_places #instatravel #igtravel #instacity #travelphotography #citywalls #picoftheday #quietsunday #writetotravel #familyadventures #familygo #wanderwisely

Travelodge York Layerthorpe is in a great location to explore the city of York. The rooms are modern, the beds extremely comfortable, and the cooler system a complete blessing. The unlimited breakfast was really great value – and as our little ones could eat for completely free, this was a really great saving for us.
We loved having the option of walking into York and not having to move the campervan or pay for parking. There is so much to see and do in York and I will share more on the attractions soon.
Would we return?? Most definitely.
