As a family of five, we really enjoy camping. There is nothing better than sitting outside, watching the sun go down, with the kids playing happily in view of you. Don’t get me wrong, I know camping is all the better in the sunshine, and I also know that you can’t predict the British weather.  I guess this is why I spend hours searching the internet for family friendly campsites with good amenities, that are safe for our littles, and that have a great choice of activities locally. We spent a while looking for campsites near York and stumbled across Camping and Caravanning Club Sheriff Hutton campsite

Campsites near York

We tend to go for the smaller campsites, with electric hook up and a choice of hard standing and grass pitches.  Good wash facilities is essential with a family bathroom preferential as showers are not loved by our 3 year old and 10 month old.  I also look for a campsite with a children’s play park as a minimum and with a good choice of activities locally.

We are always on the look out for wonderful family friendly campsites with good amenities that are in a good location. Last weekend, the sun made an appearance, and we headed off for a weekend stay to Sheriff Hutton, with Camping and Caravanning Club.

Camping and Caravanning Club

Camping and Caravanning Club have hundreds of sites around the UK and across Europe to suit everyone, including families, couples, and groups. Whats more you can join the club for a small charge to receive discounts on site fees, ferry crossings, family discounts, and to gain access to member exclusive sites (please see website for further details)

Camping and Caravanning Club: Sheriff Hutton Campsite

We had a very long journey on a Friday night but as soon as we arrived we were warmly greeted at reception, and directed to our hard standing pitch. We were given all the relevant information that we needed during our stay. The site had a small shop for anything that you may need or have forgotten, and there are plenty of information leaflets for recommendations for thing to do in the area, places to eat, and takeaways that will deliver to the campsite.

The Sherriff Hutton campsite is a small and friendly site with around 90 grass and hard standing pitches.  What hit me instantly was that the site was beautifully maintained, the lawns well cut, with an abundance of trees and flowers dotted around.

We were shown to our pitch. The pitches were a great size, and the shower block and amenities only a small walk away across the field (important for those midnight dashes to the bathroom with the little ones.) We were positioned opposite the play ground, much to the girls delight. What I love about the site is the 6M rule, so you know you have space around you to enjoy the great outdoors, without hearing every word spoken by your neighbours.

(Teepee Tent – Red by Hape – available to purchase from Argos .)

Campsite near York

We have stayed at many campsites over the years, and this campsite near York was an ideal, tranquil base to explore York and the surrounding area. Come the evening when it was time to try to tempt the girls away from the play park, and settle the little man to sleep, the campsite was noticeably quiet and peaceful.

Another plus point for those that may need more to persuade them that camping is for them – is the glamping option available on this site. Here you can enjoy a night under the stars in a luxury ready erect safari tent. The tents come complete with cosy furnishings and luxuries- all you need to do is bring yourself, and enjoy the great outdoors.

Things to do near to the Sheriff Hutton Campsite

Sheriff Hutton

Sheriff Hutton is a charming rural village in North Yorkshire that lies about 1 – 1.5  miles away from the campsite. It has two pubs, a post office and noticeably the ruins of Neville Castle that tower over the village.

Yorkshire Lavender

This was recommended to us on reception and is well worth a visit.  Yorkshire Lavender is a 60-acre family run hillside farm with lavender gardens, a maze, plant shop and a sculpture park.

York

We headed to York for the day to meander around the shops and to wander around the Shambles. The Shambles is an area of narrow lanes with beautiful picturesque 15 century buildings that lean into the middle of the street. There is a series of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Before heading home we were lucky enough to enjoy a luxury Lady Betty Afternoon Tea at the world renowned Bettys.

York Minster

York Minster is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. During a visit to the Minster, marvel at the spectacular stain glass work, climb the central tower and enjoy the beautiful views across York.

Camping and Caravanning Club: Sheriff Hutton Campsite -Our Verdict

We had a wonderful stay here. The site was a safe, family friendly and peaceful campsite. The amenities were excellent, with a family bathroom, electric hook up, dishwashing facilities, a children’s play area and wi-fi. I liked that the site team were on site and if required. Sheriff Hutton is a great base, with access to local attractions and park and rides if you are heading into York. We had a really relaxing weekend and would love to return.

**Disclosure: we were invited to stay for the weekend for the purpose of this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own**

Lovely lavender! That field of purple looks amazing. I bet they have some great tea and coffee options in their cafe. Are lavender lattes popular in the UK? I’ve seen a few coffee shops here in Denver with lavender lattes on the menu, but I haven’t tried one yet. I think I’d like it, though.

I’m Native American and I think the toy tipis are very cute, but I’d just like to give a shout-out to Native-owned companies as Native-inspired products have been sold without benefit to Native people for a very long time. I bet it would make a cool blog post if you could get in touch with any of these artists! http://www.beyondbuckskin.com/p/buy-native.html

I grew up camping in Australia (a long time ago) and the facilities were a lot more basic than that! Looks like such a fun place to stay. The lavender fields are dreamy!

What a great looking site – I agree, well maintained pitches make a world of difference. It looks like you got a brilliant spot on the site too. I haven’t visited York in ages and this has given me a craving to go back. I love the history there. Great review!

Wow! A Campsite with wifi! That’s luxury! I really like that they have showers too. We went to a festival for a weekend and they didn’t have a shower I was so longing for one! lol! We’ve been passed Yorkshire Lavender once but didn’t go in as our destination was Whitby. I regret it now. It looks so beautiful! And I’d love to experience the maze there too. I think our kids would like that too. Looks like you had such a lovely time exploring York.

Thank you so much for linking up with us on #ExplorerKids Linky. I hope you have enjoyed the readings this week and we’ll hope you come back and join us next week too. We love to hear what you’ve been up too. 🙂 x

It sounds like a lovely campsite. We’ve not ventured up north camping (more chance of rain!), but maybe we should try it one year #explorerkids

Camping with kids 🏕

I was going to share my next favourite campsite but thought I would mix it up a bit with a new topic. Campervan storage. So tell me... What is your favourite storage hack?

As our Campervan conversion isn’t quite fully finished we have had to be clever with storage. As a family of five in a T5 space is super tight!

Our favourite hacks so far....

➡️ Using cushion covers / pillow cases to store items

➡️ storage hooks on the back of the seats (I think I learned about this one from @daisy_thefamilycamper )

➡️ Using a pop up tent to store the large bulky items such as car seats and strollers etc

➡️ Packing pods to organise the clothes!!! My absolutely favourite thing ever we have used them for years.

➡️ plastic storage bucket for the outside toys that we take to the beach (and can even double up as a baby/toddler bath

➡️ Foldable items, folding table, folding scooters, folding chairs, the list goes on but helps with space

➡️hamman towels. Absolutely wonderful. We were sent some towels to review a few years back and they are incredible. We haven’t looked back and we are fully converted. They don’t take up much space, dry really quickly, have multiple uses and basically we just love them!

🌈 I have linked my post in my stories - but would love to hear if you have any campervan storage ideas to share or add?

Hope you have all had a lovely weekend whatever you have been up to ?

Happy Sunday!!! So I have decided on a Sunday fo Happy Sunday!!!

So I have decided on a Sunday for the next few weeks I am going to do a little campsite share. Sharing our favourite campsites that we have stayed in our #t5camper over the last two or three years. I wanted to (hopefully) give you some inspiration for all those dreaming and planning for when we are able to hit the road in the future.

My first campsite is @love2stay in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, UK. Set in 22 acres of grounds with touring and Glamping on-site.

Love2stay is a beautiful resort and an absolute gem of a site. We have booked again for this year and have stayed more than once over the last two years.

Facilities

Love 2 Stay has serviced pitches and a glamping village. The toilet block is modern and clean. There is so much to do on site you won’t want to venture far.

➡️ swipe for pictures

There is a natural swimming pool, restaurant and pizzeria, fitness suite and thermal bath, assault course, children’s adventure play zone, barefoot trails, mini and junior craft activities, cinedrome for movie nights, yoga and Pilates classes, paddle boarding and kayaking....... the list goes on

What we loved

⭐️So many activities on site for everyone
⭐️restaurant/pizzeria on site
⭐️Swimming pool
⭐️Spa/gym on site
⭐️Dogs allowed (with separate dog walking area and dog agility course )
⭐️Brilliant size serviced pitches
⭐️Glamping available
⭐️Usually Open all year round (covid restriction dependent)

Things to consider

⭐️it gets booked up so book in advance
⭐️No tents allowed
⭐️No on-site grocery shop
⭐️it is the most expensive campsite we have ever stayed when you factor in all the additional activities that do -but it’s a wonderful experience and we absolutely love it here and it is a place that we will keep on returning to.

Please do ask if you have any questions or if you have stayed here too?

I’ll be back next Sunday with another gem !
