You know how we love to spend our days outdoors. We love van life and family glamping breaks. A while back we spent a lovely couple of days glamping in Wales. We discovered Eco Retreats – a place to relax, unwind and recharge our batteries.

Eco Retreats, Wales

Nestled in the heart of the forest, 25 minutes off the main road you will find Eco Retreats. Eco Retreats is an eco friendly retreat on an organic working farm in the heart of Wales’ Dyfi forest, approximately 7 miles north-east of Machynlleth.  We stumbled across this beautiful retreat when we were searching for family friendly glamping in Wales on the internet.
If you are looking for an incredibly peaceful family friendly glamping site then definitely check out Eco Retreats, Wales.
When we arrived at Eco Retreats, we were greeted with a friendly face and quickly shown to our yurt. The first thing I noticed was how much space there was for the children to run around.  Arrive at Eco Retreats and you will find 5 living spaces spread out over 50 acres of land. You can choose between a yurt or a tipi, all equipped with a wood burning stove, a private eco toilet, an outdoor wood fired bath, and an eco shower.  The site is wi-fi free so you can really get back to basics and enjoy life free from distraction. The car park is a slight walk away from the yurt so pack carefully so that you don’t have to make too many journeys to and from the car.

Our Yurt

The yurts are furnished beautifully. There is a double bed, and sofa beds for the kids. Each yurt is equipped with a two ring gas burner, kettle, saucepans, frying pan, utensils and cutlery.  There is a tap with fresh spring water outside and a water filter inside. Outside there is a private area around the yurt or tipi, with a seating and campfire area.
The yurts do not have electricity, however there are beautiful rustic lanterns and candles dotted around to provide light in the evening.
It was early evening and the light was fading …. I sat outside, wrapped up in a blanket and loved that I had no idea where my phone was. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to relax, unwind and watch the children running free and a little bit wild.

Tip – The nearest shop is around 25-30 minutes drive so stock up before you come.

Things to do around Eco Retreats

We didn’t really want to leave Eco Retreats!  There are lots of lovely walks and the children loved exploring the grounds and playing in the stream.  If you do want to explore nearby, the market town of
Machynlleth is a short drive away. We could not drive all this way from our home town and not stop by at one of my most favourite places – Aberdovey. A wander along the beach in the sunshine and an ice cream – well it is definitely good for the soul!

What do you need to pack for a glamping break at Eco Retreats?

The accommodation is fully equipped for everything you need for your stay, including  organic, fair trade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar, and salt and pepper. Just remember to pack warm clothes, wellies and waterproofs!! (and maybe a few extra changes for the kids who will love to play in the stream!
You will need to bring your food with you, as I mentioned earlier – the nearest shop is a good drive away, so stop by and get your food before you arrive!!

Glamping with a toddler?

We bought our own travel cot and bits and pieces including warm clothes, all-weather play suit, and our trusty grow bag for nighttime. The ground is uneven so we chose to bring the carrier rather than a stroller. I have to say our little man absolutely loved our glamping holiday and slept really well, I think it was all that fresh air.

What an absolute gem of a place. If you are looking for somwhere to stay, to ditch the phones and screens and spend quality time as a family outdoors, then definitely check out Eco Retreats for a wonderful and unique glamping break in Wales. I’ve never been camping or glamping. This looks like a really well equipped tent and a beautiful setting 🙂

I am really tempted by this place, I love this part of Wales and I know my kids would love to stay in a yurt (and I would love to go camping without all the gear!)

Love the tipi. We stayed in one once – not somewhere as cold as that tho! #MondayEscapes

Just been looking for a glamping site for North Wales as only have a couple of days so taking all our camping gear seems quite an effort. Didn’t come across these but love the look of them and not an area I have been before so will definitely be pinning for later. #MondayEscapes

What a nice place for kids to connect with nature, I remember how much I used to love going out and playing in the countryside as a kid. I like my comforts quite a lot so haven’t tried glamping yet, but being in the countryside sounds lovely… #MondayEscapes

Love North Wales, although only ever camped there. Glamping would be a real treat and the site sounds idyllic #MondayEscapes

🚐Vanlife with kids 🚐

I often get messages asking “where do you all sleep” and where did your toddler or baby sleep in the camper ?

We bought our #t5 when our eldest was just 2, and we have had to adapt as our family has grown. We didn’t have the roof converted until much later so we tried a fair few sleeping options!

I thought It might be helpful if I listed all of the sleeping options we have tried in our vwT5 because I often get questions about sleeping options with young kids.

⭐️Our new born baby slept in a sleepyhead in the camper as it was easily transportable and worked as crib.

⭐️ We then found a deluxe travel cot that fit perfectly at the base of our rib bed and this worked from about 6 months

⭐️We then moved on to a toddler inflatable air bed placed again at the bottom of our bed. We found the toddler beds fit perfectly across the width of the van

⭐️moving on we purchased a hammock that fitted over just the driver and passenger seat and this worked great from about 3+

⭐️ Finally as our family grew... We had our pop top roof added and the children slept well in the roof. We had a safety net fitted to the opening of the roof and this allowed all our children to sleep in the roof safely and gave us some peace of mind - particularly as our son was young.

I’ve linked my post in my stories but do let me know if you have tried any other options that work for young children, particularly if you don’t have an elevating roof! Always here if I can help with anything or if you have any questions.

Just popping on to wish all of you a Happy New Year 💕

Here we are .... Still hanging out in tier 4, (but hey I have three lovely days off 🤩) we have all got this🙌🏻

For now I’m going to keep dreaming, planning, doing a bit of vanlife shopping and redesigning our campervan 😂 (so if any of you lovely vanlife peeps can share and tag me in a picture of your interiors I would be eternally grateful).

Hey I may even get this dissertation done 🤣

If it’s okay I’ll keep sharing the little bits in between, and of course our van life tips and tricks over the new year, until we can explore once again.

Thanks for sticking with us - happy new year to my faves, lots of love and stay safe

It’s my last day of annual leave today. So we have spent the afternoon adding a few fairy lights to the MultiFlyer climbing frame - sprinkling a bit of magic and festive cheer out in the garden....

Moving on to the the camper next :) it definitely needs some fairy lights and a tree - Don’t you think? 🌲

If this year has taught us anything, it’s defini If this year has taught us anything, it’s definitely to not take anything for granted. To take each day as it comes and to enjoy the simple things in life, finding joy in those ordinary moments.

I don’t need reminding of this but family and friends are everything. As are good old hugs. (I miss hugs!) And plans. Blooming love a plan. 😍

So ill keep on bobbing on here if that’s okay? I’ll keep planning, writing about our campervan adventures and sharing our van life love and outdoor life. Because we have to have hope and we have to keep dreaming....

Hope you are all doing okay, sending a virtual hug if you need one this weekend. My inbox is ALWAYS open, always.

4 years blogging!! Wowzers that has flown by!!

I’ve had lots of new followers lately so thought I would pop on and say hello and tell you a little bit about us.

I’m Katy and I am behind Otis and us travel blog. I started the blog during my maternity leave - really because I love taking photos and wanted a place that the kids can look back on and to document our van life adventures. I am a full time specialist nurse and also currently working on an MSc. I am a whirlwind and life is definitely jam packed but I wouldn’t have it any other way :)

We love our beautiful T5!! We have made so many memories and taken some wonderful roadtrips over the years. We haven’t managed to get out in the van much this year, but hey I’ve still been dreaming ... hopefully next year🤞🏻🤞🏻

We have three free spirited kiddies who love nothing more than a road trip, sleeping in the poptop roof, exploring, beach life and toasting marshmallows.

Mr Otis and Us, what can I say? The chilled one who has so much patience😆. He drives the many miles, lives on coffee and never ever says no to my crazy road trips and ideas.

So here we are - the Otis and Us tribe, popping on to say hi.

Thank you so much for following along, for all your interaction and love. It means the world. I love to hear from you all, every message and every comment. Thank you 🙏🏻

Hope you will stay with us for 2021 ,

Stay safe

Katy xx 🌈
