Chicago the Musical Review
Set in the 1920’s Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.
Faye Brookes who you may have seen on your screen in Coronation street plays the fame hungry Roxie Hart, and she plays this role beautifully. Djalenga Scott is cast as the smart and confident Velma Kelly. Scott has insane vocals and has a wonderful chemistry with Brookes. I thought Kevin Clifton, who you may have seen on Strictly – played the smooth-talking, manipulative lawyer Billy Flynn wonderfully and his vocals really are amazing. A wonderful surprise to see Sinitta Malone, who played the tough, assertive Mama Morton incredibly.
The cast…the choreography… the lighting …and the costumes are all incredible. I can’t finish this review without mentioning the band, who were absolutely first class and made the show.
