Having visited the West Coast of Scotland on our first campervan road trip, we knew that one day we would have to return. We planned a one night stopover at Camusdarach campsite at the very end our Outer Hebrides road trip in our VW converted campervan. We love a campsite with access to water and this has made our list of best Scotland campsites. Here is our honest Camusdarach campsite review

Camusdarach Campsite review
We stayed at Camusdarach campsite for just one night at the very end our our Outer Hebrides island hopping adventure. We had had to slightly change our itinerary and ended up coming through the Isle of Skye due to the Calmac ferry disruptions. We took the ferry from Uig to Mallaig. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, and the campsite is just 12 minutes drive from the ferry port.
The campsite was fairly easy to find, we grabbed take away pizza (The Bakehouse and Crannog we can highly recommend!) as we drove through Mallaig to the campsite and arrived at the campsite to check in.
We were greeted with a friendly face, directions to our allocated pitch and the check in process was all straightforward (We had booked this campsite in advance). The first thing I noted about the campsite was how quiet and peaceful it was. It is also beautifully maintained.
Please do note the campsite closes on 15th September for the 2023 Season and will be open on 1st April 2024.
Campsite facilities
The main reason I booked this campsite was because of its direct access to the beach. We love a campsite with a seaview or a campsite with direct access to water for paddle boarding, and this campsite is absolutely perfect, with a dog friendly beach just a short stroll from the campsite. The sunsets are incredible here too.
Campsite facilities include;
- Electric hook up
- Tent pitching field
- Hard standing pitches
- Wi-Fi covering the site
- Modern Toilet and shower block (absolutely immaculate!)
- Washing up area
- Direct access to beach
- Small shop at reception to order croissants and coffee to go!
- Excellent sized pitches
- Family friendly and dog friendly

Final thoughts
We stayed here for one night but could have easily stayed a week. The campsite is in a perfect location to explore the West coast of Scotland, and although we didn’t explore this time (we stayed at the campsite for a couple of days of rest!) there is so much to do nearby. In addition the campsite is really close to Mallaig ferry port for island hopping adventures.
The beach is a gorgeous beach with the most stunning sunsets. There is a small beach for launching too. The campsite is family friendly and dog friendly. and super quiet at night. Pitches are generous and the campsite wash block was immaculate at all times during our short stay. Please do book in advance during busy periods as the campsite does get booked up quickly. We booked this campsite well in advance of our road trip as I knew what days were would be in the area, and we really wanted to stay here. The stop over also helped to break up the journey home.
The neighbour was pretty friendly too 🙂
