This was our first stop on our French road trip in a VW campervan. We started with an overnight stopover at the Coastguard pub in Dover, before catching an early morning ferry over to Calais. We booked four nights in Loire before heading over to Vendee for the remainder of our holiday. We were in need of a few days to relax and recharge after a busy few weeks at work, and this campsite was the perfect place to do just that.
Camping Château de Chanteloup facilities
The campsite is one of the Le Castels campsites offering luxury campsites in France. It is a beautifully quiet, with spacious pitches set around a large grassy area with views of the chateau. There are options of shaded pitches, open pitches and optional woodland pitches, there is a pitch for everyone’s requirements. We had the option and picked a pitch on the main lawn with views of the chateau, near to the swimming pool. We were asked to align our camper with the doors opening out the field. Hook up was available, and water taps and bins were dotted around and easily accessible.
There is a gorgeous campsite bar and restaurant, washing up facilities and clean and spacious shower block in the courtyard area. There is a small shop for the essentials you may have forgotten or run out of and a lovely beautifully maintained heated swimming pool.
2 Hours free WiFi is provided on arrival to enjoy at your leisure, and there is an option to pay for additional WiFi.
Dogs are welcome on the campsite.
Camping Château de Chanteloup for kids
The campsite has a kids club in the summer, and our tribe (and daddy) took park in the evening football ran by the kids club and everyone loved it. There is a basketball and volleyball area, and a beautifully maintained heated swimming pool open until early evening.
I use the term ‘heated’ loosely, as it the pool was absolutely freezing! But it didn’t stop the kids from jumping in on a daily basis and dragging us adults in for fun. Floats were allowed and it was a lovely environment and considering it was the school holidays it really wasn’t too busy. We never struggled to find a sun lounger or somewhere to sit around the pool at any time of the day.
Just beyond the pool is the woodland playground. This was equipped with a zip wire , seesaw, two trampolines, swings, and a play village aimed at the younger kids. It was never really busy and a really lovely play area. There is also an indoor games room to keep the kids entertained if the weather doesn’t playing ball.
Food and drink at Château de Chanteloup
There is a restaurant onsite that has the usual options including pizza, burgers, chips and salads. You do need to book for the restaurant.
There is also a takeaway service and you can order food and drink from the menu on the night (you don’t need to book). We nipped over and grabbed two salads to go with our falafel flatbreads one night and they were ready instantly.
The shop stocks all the basics, water, fizzy drinks, wine, cheese, limited vegetables, milk. The shop is really expensive so do try to stock up before you arrive.
You can purchase fresh baguettes, croissants, and donuts from 08.30 each morning from just outside the reception area. The kids loved going to pick up the croissants – be there fore 8.30 if you want a chocolate donut or pain au chocolate as they do sell quickly.
There is a bar area where you can sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine or two or an ice cream.
Camping Château de Chanteloup review
This campsite is absolutely stunning and we loved our stay here. It is a beautifully quiet campsite and perfect for a laid back, relaxed stay. There isn’t a huge amount to do close by but there is plenty to do on site and we really didn’t feel the need to dash out and explore the area. We loved having the opportunity to spend time together as family, enjoy the outdoors, play Monopoly deal for hours and to enjoy this beautifully relaxed and picturesque campsite before heading to our next destination – Vendée.
We would return in a heartbeat – this family friendly campsite near Le Mans in Loire is just perfect.
