Camping on the Isle of Wight
If you are thinking of visiting the Isle of Wight with children then camping is a wonderful way to experience the island. We love nothing more than to experience vanlife with our kids. We are a campervan family of five and have a converted VWT5 campervan. You will often find us exploring the UK and beyond, in search of great UK family friendly campsites, hidden gems, and days out.
We love our paddleboards ( Read our full review of the EZ paddleboard and Portofino paddleboards here) and therefore love North Wales, or the Lake District, finding the BEST coastal campsites, or campsites with access to water for paddleboarding. We have just returned from an amazing road trip to the Outer Hebrides, so for the August holidays decided to continue with the island theme with a visit to the Isle of Wight.
Located just off the South coast of England, and only 45 minutes by ferry from Portsmouth, 1 hour from Southhampton, or 30 minutes from Lymington in the New Forest, it is easily accessible and a great destination for families. The island is extremely dog friendly with many options for dog friendly beaches, campsites, and restaurants and coffee shops.
Adgestone Campsite
Adgestone campsite is only 20 minutes from Fishbourne ferry port. The campsite is set in the heart of the countryside, with the Red squirrel trail only a short stroll from the campsite meaning that there are some great cycling and walking opportunities directly from the campsite.
This campsite has a swimming pool on site (Adgestone campsite pool is open and heated from the Spring Bank Holiday until the first week in September). There is also a small paddling pool too. This is this is a huge draw for families as kids love nothing more than a swimming pool!
The campsite is large and well laid out, with spacious pitches and well kept grounds. We were set at the back in a shaded secluded pitches, and this worked well for us with three kids and dog, and the red squirrel trail was also easily accessed from a gate near to our pitch. The pitch is a grass pitch, with electric hook up (EHU). Ready camp tents also available on site. The staff were friendly, and helpful at all times.
Adgestone is dog friendly. Dogs have to be kept on a lead at all times, but there is a dedicated dog walking field on site which is a great addition.
Club wi-fi is also available and free of charge, although 100% coverage is not guaranteed due to rural location, and we were not able to access the wifi during our stay, not that this was a problem for us.

Adgestone Club campsite for families
The campsite has a great heated swimming pool and a paddling pool making it a great option for families. Children have to be attended at all times. There is no lifeguard on site.
There is also a large kids play area, with football nets, a slide and swing and a large grassy area for ball games etc.
The campsite is large, but for us it was quiet. Our pitch was set back amongst the trees and although we noted family groups camping – we didn’t experience any loud noise late at night.
One thing that is worth noting – the roads leading to the campsite are REALLY narrow, so may not be suitable for large vehicles – do check before booking. There is no shop on site for the basics such as break or milk but there is a shop within walking distance (about ten minutes walk).
Things to do in the area
This is our first visit to the Isle of Wight and we found it great for kids. Check out our guide for things to do on the Isle of Wight with kids here.
If you love cycling you can access the Red Squirrel Trail from the campsite. The Red Squirrel Trail offers 32 miles of mostly traffic-free cycling through the heart of the countryside in the Isle of Wight.
You can also easily walk to the coastal resort of Sandown from the campsite. It took us about 40 minutes with three kids and a dog! Sandown is a classic seaside town, with plenty of beaches. We took our Goldie to Yaverland beach – dog friendly beach in Sandown. There is loads to do and see here, and we managed to visit Dinosaur Isle and Wild heart animal sanctuary which the kids loved with its focus on conservation and rescuing animals! The nearest train station is in Sandown.
You can also search for dinosaur footprints on the Isle of Wight. Find our where here.
If you are looking for a great place to eat in Sandown we had a great evening meal at Reef on the seafront, family friendly and dog friendly too.
Final thoughts – Adgestone campsite review
We had a lovely five day stay at Adgestone campsite, Isle of Wight. If you love walking and cycling, there are plenty of options direct from the campsite. The kids loved the swimming pool and we visited most days. The red squirrels trail is easily accessible from the campsite with the coastal resort of Sandown about 40 minutes walk from the campsite. The pitches are spacious and our pitch in particular was quiet and secluded – perfect for us. It is a really family friendly campsite (and dog friendly campsite, and the kids made friends and had a blast! Would we return? Absolutely.
