I have always loved taking photographs for as long as I remember. It was really what spurred me on to write a travel blog, I wanted to document our family adventures, share our photographs, and a place that the kids could go to to look back on all our travels and family campervan trips. Space in the campervan is always a little tight, so we really don’t have the space to take lots of gadgets and tech. We take our phones everywhere and the cameras are really good on the new iPhones, but I wanted more of an action camera; something that we could bring along on our water adventures, withstand bike rides, water parks dips in the sea and other outdoor activities. The GoPro seemed to fit the bill. This is why we love our GoPro for travel and outdoor adventures.

Why I love my GoPro
I love my camera on my iPhone 15, but I don’t love taking it out on the paddle board. I have fallen off the paddle board into the sea on many occasions, and I always worry about dropping my phone, cracking the screen or losing it, no matter what precautions I take.
We love to visit Guernsey and last year we tried quite a few family outdoor adventures including coasteering, surfing and foraging. The weather was against us on most of our adventures as it was Easter and there was not a chance that I was going to attempt to take my phone out with me. The GoPro worked perfectly as I tried to capture the jumps, rock climbing and swimming in the sea – let me tell you – it was pretty rough, wet and very cold that week!
The GoPro is so small it packs well into my bumbag, rucksack, or swim bag. It is easy to charge and easy to transfer photos onto your phone.
I LOVE the quality of the photos of my Go Pro particularly in the sea, and I love all the campers mounts and accessories that you can purchase. We have the Mini Extension Pole + Tripod, magnetic swivel clip, floaty, and hand and wrist strap, and it really is easy to grab the GoPro and go.
I take my GoPro everywhere with me, on our campervan road trips, to the Outer Hebrides, To Guernsey, on all of our paddleboard adventures. We have recently taken it on our French road trip to the Loire Valley and Vendée. A GoPro is perfect for a waterslide or two!
How easy is it to transfer the photos from a GoPro?
I am not tech savvy at all. Transferring photos needs to be quick, easy and straightforward for me, otherwise I just don’t use the camera.
All you need to do is download the GoPro Quik app from the App Store, pair your GoPro and you can view and download your photos and videos from your phone, it really is that simple.
GoPro 12 features
My Hubby bought me a GoPro 9 for my birthday and I love it so much. It is robust, compact and withstands a lot of adventure. I decided to upgrade it to the GoPro 12, and the kids still use my GoPro 9 mostly in the swimming pool and the sea.
The Gopro Hero 12 (black) has incredible image quality and boost in the battery life, I do find the GoPro 9 battery does drain quite quickly and regularly needs a charge. You don’t need a waterproof case for the GoPro, and the Hero 12, is waterproof to 10m. It has HyperSmooth video stabilization, a larger field of view, and again you can edit your shots with the GoPro Quik app. The GoPro Hero12 requires an SD card. This is sold separately, and I didn’t realise and had to search for one on holiday in Guernsey before we could use it – so don’t be caught out and get one before you leave on your travels!
GoPro for travel – final thoughts
So as you may have gathered, I love my GoPro for travel and outdoor adventures and despite having a phone with a great camera, it will not replace this tiny action camera that can withstand some serious adventure! I know that there is an option to use a waterproof case with your phone, but The GoPro 12 is compact, hardy, waterproof and the accessories available allow for on the go filming in all conditions. I will continue to add our GoPro photographs to this post as we continue our travels but you can also catch our videos and photos over on Tiktok and Instagram.
